Barton Rovers FC 1 (Michael Gyasi 51) Fleet Town FC 0 – Evostik East Division 07/04/18
The incessant rain we’ve been having recently finally relented and the spring-like conditions provided both sides a decent surface for football……..game on at Sharpenhoe Road!!
With both sides very adjacent to each other at the wrong end of the table, anticipation that this would be a tight game proved correct as the match unfolded.
Rovers definitely shaded the majority of the possession in what proved to be a first half stalemate. There were half-chances for Hugh Alban-Jones who skied one over the bar, Paul Andrews from a corner also clearing the bar, a James Verney run and shot from the right which went wide and a Michael Gyasi effort which also failed to trouble the Fleet Town keeper. Fleet Town failed to bring Rovers keeper Matt Finlay into serious action during the half. Some long periods of possession and concerted effort by Rovers to play a decent passing game was good to see and full marks to both skipper Andrews and Ronayne Marsh-Browne who were rocks at the back for Rovers this entire game.
The second half was just 6 minutes old when Rovers final broke the stalemate and went ahead through a Michael Gyasi run and shot on the left – good finish this one. Rovers were continuing to dominate possession and looking good to add to their lead but, again, some wasteful finishing and a couple of decent saves by Liam Beach the Fleet Town keeper kept the final scoreline at 1-0 Rovers and a welcome three points to increase the cushion between Rovers and Arlesey Town who are stuck in the relegation spot currently.
Games will come thick and fast now as the final few weeks of the season are upon us – another local derby on Monday night away at AFC Dunstable is next up for Rovers.
