The youthful Rovers side fielded for this midweek, end of season, 'catch-up' match against AFC Dunstable was notable as it contained no less than four Daniels namely messrs Gould, Talbot, Newton and Jarvis. The match carried significance for AFC in terms of a further three points cementing them a guaranteed play-off spot in what, for them, has been a season of relative success whilst Rovers were simply playing for pride and a bit of local oneupmanship. AFC completely dominated in both halfs of this match but singularly failed to convert many of the goal-scoring opportunities their slick passing and possession play deserved. First half chances were passed up by Nathan Frater, a Newman Carney free-kick which everybody missed, Jermaine Hall and Louis Bircham shots which went wide or into the arms of Dan Gould. However, right on the stroke of half-time AFC snatched what proved to be the solitary but winning goal when Gould was unable to hold a B J Christie shot and Bircham smashed the rebound into the net. A backs to the wall first half in which Gould in the Rovers goal was outstanding undone at the worst possible time. The second half was all AFC but, as in the first half, their profligacy in front of goal was notable. Christie, Hall and Bill Morgan with a header that crashed off the Rovers bar all went close, Gould somehow kept Christie off the scoresheet with two fantastic point-blank stops in quick succession with 70 minutes gone. The introduction of Drew Phillips gave Rovers an added bit of pace and he had Rovers only real effort of the second half but shot wide of Jamie Head's goal. Phillips went on to force a late corner which Dan Jarvis, arriving late at the back post, got his head to but failed to keep the ball down and it sailed harmlessly over. So no disgrace in terms of the score and some hard graft over this 90 minutes for the Rovers lads and three further points for AFC cementing their end of season play-off spot. Special mention To Dan Gould, Dan Newton and Sean Beesley who put their bodies and abilities on the line for Rovers tonight.
