Opening day loss for The Rovers
Barton Rovers endured a difficult start to life in Central Division One in the Evo Stik League Southern . Yaxley known as The Cuckoos despatched Barton Rovers 4-1 at I2itive Park in the first step four game in the club’s history thanks to two goals from Matt Sparrow and strikes from Phil Stebbing and Dan Cotton (penalty). Barton fielded a much changed side with several players making their debuts and found themselves 1 nil down after 11 minutes. However excellent work on the right from Ike Nzuruba set up a goal for Jimmy Hartley to bring it back to 1-1. Barton were then on top and created several good chances before a great piece of individual skill led to the score being 2-1 to the Cuckoos at half time. Barton were soon 3-1 down early in the second half as an awkward bounce off the 3g pitch caught out Dan Gould in The Rovers goal. Just before the hour mark Paul Andrews was harshly judged to have committed a foul inside the area with many people around the ground convinced that the foul had actually been committed outside the box , the penalty was expertly converted to give the home club an un assailable 4-1 lead. Rovers did press to get back into it and 5 mins from time should have pulled one back but a guilt edged chance for Sam Oyineran saw him head wide from just 2 yards out which summed up Rovers lack of clinical finishing and wasted chances on the day. Tony Fontenelle stated 'this is a new team that has been put together and with a new management team on board also it may take time for the players to gel and get that team understanding. The pleasing thing was that we did create a few good goalscoring opportunities and on another day we may have gone and got something out of the game. However we have a tough week coming up with the visit of Cambridge City and then at home in the FA Cup against Rothwell Corinthians. The lads and myself would be grateful for as many fans to come down and show their support this season'.
