An away day at near neighbours Welwyn Garden City on Bank Holiday Monday for Rovers. The opening half pitched two evenly-matched teams against one another. Rovers' Sam Oyeniran was prominent on the right and made some telling runs at the WGC back four but the final ball simply wouldn't fall for Rovers to capitalise on some good wing play. Andrew Phillips headed just over early on and Oyeniran smashed a shot against the woodwork within the first half-hour. Phillips was denied a stonewall penalty when, clean through he had his ankle clipped by a fully-stratcjhed Dan Green the WGC keeper on 35 minutes. Half-time game and the teams went in scoreless.
Rovers were still in the dressing room when WGC took the lead in the 46th minute with WGC's Tony Williams being given all the time in the world to rifle home from 12 yards out. Rovers stepped up to the plate though and took the game to their opponents with firstly a Charlie Hayford then Victor Osubu efforts being comfortably held by Green. Then on 76 minutes Rovers were presented with a way back into this game when skipper Paul Andrews was upended in the WGC box but, from the resultant penalty-kick Drew Phillips, normally so reliable, inexplicably shot miles wide of the goal. Dan Jarvis was next to try his luck but, having made great inroads into the WGC box his shot sailed over. There were a number of cautions late in the game as Rovers kept up the pressure but their final ball and finishing lacked composure and they were left to rue the penalty miss as WGC grabbed a win by the slimmest of margins.
