Wasted chances cost Rovers

Barton Rovers lack of success in recent cup competitions continued with a home loss to local rivals Kempston Rovers at Sharpenhoe Road last Saturday.

The opening half of this match was an evenly-contested affair that Barton shaded in terms of chances created but, with that said, Martin Conway the Kempston keeper was rarely in serious action. However, Conway was indebted to his left-back Seb Simpson who cleared a Victor Osubu effort off the line after 12 minutes, Further strikes from Drew Phillips and an Osubu free-kick failed to bring Conway into the action. Barton's failure to score whilst on top cost them dear when, a rare foray upfield by Kempston resulted in a corner which ex-Barton player Jermaine Hall headed home on 43 minutes to the delight of the travelling support. Hardly believable but Barton went in at half-time a goal down.

Now chasing the game, Barton were caught cold defensively on 47 minutes when Hall once more capitalised on some slack defending running through the Barton rearguard to slot his and Kempston's second goal - a cool finish this one. Barton Manager Tony Fontanelle then rang the changes with all three permitted subs sent into action. Barton fought hard and both Connor Vincent and Drew Phillips forced point blank saves from Conway. It was to be that man Hall's day though as, after 79 minutes, he broke clear of a statuesque Barton defence to lob Barton Keeper Charlie Jones and complete his hat-trick to put this match out of sight. Barton did conjure a consolation goal after 87 minutes when a right-wing James Verney cross was smashed home by Phillips but too little too late and Kempston Rovers go into the hat for the next round draw.

Barton Rovers are in midweek action Tuesday evening with a Southern League cup-tie away at Welwyn Garden City FC.

Final Score: Barton Rovers 1 (Drew Phillips 87) Kempston Rovers 3 ( Jermaine Hall 43, 47 and 79)
