Rovers ran up against top of the table and in-form Bromsgrove Sporting in this league fixture at Sharpenhoe Road last Saturday. Bromsgrove were on the front foot immediately and were looking strong in all areas of the pitch particularly their two widemen John Pykett and Will Shorrock who gave the Rovers full backs an afternoon they'll quickly want to forget. Rovers were forced, throughout the first half to live on scraps of possession, although Drew Phillips did head narrowly past from a fine left-wing cross by Luke Warner-Eley after just 10 minutes. Bromsgrove were seeing a lot of the ball and it came as no surprise when, after 26 minutes, danger man Pykett put them in front when he found space on the left edge of the Rovers box and fired wide of Dan Gould the Rovers keeper to open the scoring - no more than Bromsgrove's play deserved up to that point. Gould was by far the busier of the two keepers saving further Bromsgrove efforts by Shorrock and their centre forward Jason Cowley. However, Rovers were unable to prevent a second goal before half-time when Bromsgrove's other wide man Shorrock fired home from a narrow angle to double the Bromsgrove lead after 37 minutes. Rovers were rocking and the home support breathed a sigh of relief when the half-time whistle came with Bromsgrove just 2 up.
Bromsgrove took up where they'd left off with first Josh Quaynor going close then Aaron Roberts being foiled by some smart goalkeeping by Gould. Shorrock then fired wide when clean through and the Rovers defence were getting the run around at this point. However, Rovers Jimmy Hartley almost fired a goal for Rovers after57 minutes when a tremendous Daniel Crane save low to his right hand post foiled a certain Rovers goal. Back came Bromsgrove though and they sealed the win and three league points when, after 72 minutes, Richard Gregory headed home from a corner despite a valiant attempt by Sam Gibson at the post to keep it out to make it 0-3.
Rovers won't meet many better sides than Bromsgrove Sporting who, on this display, are certain to be promotion contenders this season.
Next up Rovers are in league action Tuesday evening in an away fixture to local rivals Kempston Rovers.
Final Score: Barton Rovers FC 0 Bromsgrove Sporting 3 (Pykett 26, Shorrock 37 & Gregory 72)
