The late late show sinks the Rovers

Coming off a convincing away win in midweek Rovers, with this home league match against local rivals AFC Dunstable, were looking at a top 5 spot in the league with a win. However, this local derby match never really lived up to pre-match the expectations of crunching tackles, goalmouth scrambles and red and yellow cards by the bucketload. Instead both sides provided the spectators with stiff necks as a constant flow of high balls, missing both midfields out completely, was the order of the day. The first half was instantly forgettable for the lack of any goalmouth action as both defences dominated their opposing attackers although the lack of any quality possession and passing interchanges on both sides hardly inspired attacking football of any kind. A couple of wayward Rovers efforts early on from Connor Vincent and Jimmy Hartley that never troubled Jamie Head the AFC keeper and a yellow card forJosh Lalite the Rovers right back were the 'highlights' of a dull first 45 minutes.

In truth the second half followed the pattern of the first although AFC's Leon Cashman did force a save out of Dan Gould the Rovers keeper just after the restart. AFC's B J Christie couldn't quite reach a decent cross from the left after 62 minutes and, if anything, AFC just had the edge and looked a tad more dangerous than anything Rovers were able to put together in an attacking sense. The match was looking for all the world like a 0-0 when AFC staged a late. late show. Firstly, with just six minutes remaining substitute Joel Norris headed home from a corner with the Rovers defence spectating. Then, to rub salt in the Rovers wounds, B J Christie slotted home in added time and, certainly from the AFC perspective, put a flattering look on the final scoreline. Not one of Rovers better days and the result really highlighting the importance of winning your home matches.

Next up for Rovers is a midweek away trip to near neighbours Leighton Town in a Beds Senior Cup match.

Final Score: Barton Rovers 0 AFC Dunstable 2 (Norris 84, Christie 90+2)
