Rovers cave in 2nd half

Despite a bright start by Rovers when Victor Osobu’s right wing cross fell to striker Connor Vincent who failed to trouble home keeper James Martin with his effort at goal and a header from a corner by young centre-back Kai Phelan that went narrowly wide within the first ten minutes. Rovers were thankful keeper Niall Cooper was in inspired form as he made three fantastic saves midway through the opening half from Town’s Adam Confue and Adam Creaney to deny the home side an opening goal. Rovers created few direct goal-scoring opportunities but Nathan Tshikuna ought to have done better than fire wide after 34minutes and midfielder Dean Dummett spurned a golden chance right on the half-time whistle with Ososbu failing to convert the resultant rebound. Town by far the more composed side first half but would they rue their missed opportunities.

The second half opened with a bout of midfield ping-pong with neither side really dominating but that was soon to change. With 61 minutes gone Cooper was in action again with a save at full stretch from Town’s Aaron King at the cost of a corner. When the corner was delivered Town centre-forward Jack Bowen was certainly more alert than a statuesque Rovers defence and fired his side ahead from close range with 61 minutes on the clock. Cooper pulled off yet another top save to deny Creaney again at the expense of a corner after 68 minutes. Yet again though Rovers defensive cover was slack and, when the ball broke to Town left-back Jarvis Wilson he cracked home a fine shot to double the home side’s advantage. Despite a raft of substitutions by Rovers it was all Town and their constant pressure was rewarded with just 5 minutes remaining when their substitute Taylor Orosz cut in from the right wing and blasted a low shot well out of the reach of Cooper to finish the contest and seal a deserved three points for the home side. A very disappointing day for Rovers fans as their team really failed to fire in all departments giving Manager Tony Fontanelle a lot to contemplate.
