Connors double up to take the points

February 23, 2020

The destiny of the points in this league match was ultimately determined when a rash attempted tackle by Didcot left-back Cameron McNeill on Rovers captain Victor Osobu led to his being given a straight red card after 37 minutes of the first half. Up to that point the gusting wind had been the real winner with neither side able to master its vagaries. A poor display by both sides was transformed when, just 6 minutes after Didcot were reduced to 10 men, Rovers left-back Ty Ward made a darting run and, from the goal-line, cut the ball back to the unmarked Rovers striker Connor Vincent who took full advantage in stroking home to put the home side ahead.

The second half had barely begun when Rovers doubled their lead on 47 minutes when midfielder Nathan Tshikuna’s fine through ball found left-winger Connor Furlong darting clear of the Didcot defence and he kept his cool to slide the ball under the diving Didcot keeper Leigh Bedwell for Rovers second goal. Maximising their man advantage Rovers took the game to Didcot and, with a little more luck and possibly a bit of composure might have added to their two goal lead. Both midfielder Charlie Smith who had a fine game and captain Osobu shot over the bar when it looked easier to at least call Bedwell into action. Rovers substitute Keanu Williams almost got on the score-sheet after 82 minutes but his on-target shot was smothered and the same player had a header on target but, again, Bedwell was in position to gather his effort at goal after 88 minutes. Not a game anyone attending will remember with relish but nevertheless another three league points in the bag for Rovers and a double over Town in the league this season.
