Aylesbury Town won the tie in a huge six-pointer as they defeated Barton Rovers 0-2 away from home, goals from French and Hunte ultimately gave the Ducks the win.
The match was set up for a first home game of the new year and a huge six-pointer that could’ve taken Barton off the bottom spot for the first time since the league began. Kicking off the game, Rovers searched for an instant opener as Mackenzie Lowe striked early, however, the shot was prevented. After some end-to-end football, Aylesbury began to take charge of the tie after fifteen minutes, even having two shots cleared off the line in quick succession. In the twenty-eighth minute, the visitors put themselves ahead as Ducks attacker, French curled his shot into the top corner after a brilliant layoff from his teammate Hunte. After conceding Rovers looked to turn the heat up as Scott Joseph came close twice, but his efforts weren’t enough as Rovers headed down the tunnel a goal behind.
Coming out for the second half Rovers made a change as Kit Brown entered the scene, the hosts looked to attack with some intent this half, however, they met the same fate as the first half as Aylesbury largely dominated the play, especially in midfield. Towards the end of the game, Rovers looked the most likely to score until they were forced to compete with ten men from seventy-seven minutes when Horn Haynes picked up an injury. After using all three substitutions due to injuries, the hosts were left a man down. For the last ten minutes Rovers were fighting for their lives whilst looking for an equaliser, keeper Molinson made two more great saves to prevent a Ducks winner. However, it was heartbreak for Rovers in extra time as Hunte finally found his goal to give the Ducks all three points. The win for Aylesbury leaves Rovers five points off their opponents, rock bottom of the league.
